The Master of Music in Music Education provides students with opportunities to deepen their understanding of the historical, philosophical, psychological, and cultural aspects of music education; increase their knowledge and skill in music teaching and learning; and further develop their dispositions as reflective practitioners and mentors. Students will acquire a fundamental knowledge of research techniques and scholarly writing standards, and learn how to apply these to their work as teachers.

The Student Experience

  • The program is designed to meet the needs of practicing public school teachers wishing to further their education without leaving their classroom, and therefore is a primarily Summer program. Students can complete the program over three summer sessions that are coordinated with the public school schedule. Students will also take one course during a fall or spring semester and enroll for their capstone project in a fall and/or spring semester.
  • Guidance provided for developing a portfolio for National Board Certification (NBPTS) in Music; possible eligibility for North Carolina Advanced Teaching Licensure (M) in Music upon graduation
  • Advanced studies in music education plus conducting, music performance, ethnomusicology, music composition, music history, and/or music theory within an optional summer institute

After Graduation

  • The program is designed for practicing public school teachers wishing to further their education without leaving their classroom.
  • Advanced Licensure in Music (M Licensure) is available upon successful completion of the degree program. To qualify, the candidate must have Initial Licensure and three or more years of teaching experience.
